A Warm Welcome
Whatever the reason for your visit, we hope that you enjoy your stay with us. Our newly refurbished 10 bedrooms are stylish, sleek and comfortable, with most located above the pub, with some across in our cottage.
Our building was bought in 1811 by the Clinch family who owned the Eagle Brewery – one of the three major breweries in Witney, and when settled into the bar or a front facing room, you can enjoy panoramic views over Church Green.
The Fleece is very popular with business travellers who are looking for a more friendly and convivial place to stay than one of the big chains. The pub is perfectly located for leisure breaks in Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds, or a weekend enjoy the tranquillity of Witney. It is also frequently used by people living in and around the town, who book rooms for friends and family when they are hosting special occasions, in the knowledge that their nearest and dearest will be well looked after.
We serve top quality British seasonal food all day and our bar is a lovely place to hang out and watch the world go by with a cup of delicious coffee, a grand gin or a good glass of wine. Our eatery is open all day, serving food from 8am-10pm Monday-Saturday and Sundays 8am-9pm. There’s plenty to do in the beautiful town of Witney, with a trip to Wychwood Brewery being a must, and only a stumble away.
We have a dedicated onsite car park and when it’s full, there is plenty of space around Church Green.
Your room has tea and coffee-making facilities to make you feel right at home. The mugs we use in the rooms are by Artist, Laura Stoddart, and are available to buy from the reception desk downstairs if you like them as much as we do.
All rooms are equipped with high-spec TVs which double up as radios and we provide reliable free Wi-Fi.
The best room in the house. Sleep in style with a statement piece of bedroom furniture, best enjoyed after a long relaxing rain shower.
Luxurious and spacious with soft velvet furnishings and antique furniture, a real comfortable unwind making the most of your stay.
Our King Rooms are full of character with large comfy beds, rain showers and 40 inch size TV. Most of our King rooms can be made up as twins and fit a zed bed. Book our rooms in the cottage and have you own floor with a neighbouring cosy room.
Some of the best things come in cosy sizes. These smaller rooms have many of the same features as the rest of the bedrooms, we’ve just been a bit smarter with the design. These rooms are particularly well suited to the needs of a business traveller.
The Local Area
Located in a lovely, leafy spot in Witney – no matter whether you are here to work, relax, study, eat, drink or be entertained, the town and surrounding area has lots to offer.
Witney is the largest of the market towns in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds and much of the architecture reflects the past prosperity of the woollen trade, including the 17th century Butter Cross and church of St Mary the Virgin with its 150ft spire.
An attractive high street runs from the Butter Cross and features the 18th century town hall, the Blanket Hall and the Victorian Corn Exchange. The town has a bustling atmosphere with a good range of shops, supermarkets and a twice weekly market. Leisure facilities can be found at the Witney Lakes resort and the Windrush Leisure Centre.
The Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens exhibits over 260 different species of animals. The park is set in 160 acres of landscaped parkland and gardens 2 miles south of Burford. Not just for the children.
Burford is 7 miles from Witney and is considered the Southern gateway to the Cotswolds. A beautiful old Cotswold town, its high street enjoys beautiful views over the open countryside down to the willow fringed River Windrush in the pretty Windrush valley. A fine arched medieval bridge crosses the river at the foot of the hill. The perfect spot for coffee and mooching. The Garden Centre is defintely worth a visit, not any ordinary garden centre!
For some serious retail therapy, Bicester Village is the perfect destination and only half an hour away from Witney. Shopaholics need look no further.
We are within close proximity to Oxford, with convenient bus routes running late into the night. ‘The city of dreaming spires’, Oxford is famous the world over for its University and place in history. For over 800 years, it has been home to royalty and scholars. Nowadays, the city is a bustling cosmopolitan town. Still with its ancient University but home also to a growing hi-tech community resulting in a happy marriage between the ancient and modern. A must-see for any visitor.
If you are visiting Oxford, do pop into one of our sister pubs for a drink or a bite to eat. The Bear & Ragged Staff in Cumnor, or The Fishes North Hinksey are both set just outside the centre and are the perfect watering holes after a walk around the city.
The Fleece is part of the independently-owned Peach Pub Company. Peach is a collection of characterful gastropubs and hotels, mainly in market towns and villages around the heart of England. Since 2002 we have been serving high quality food and drink in relaxed, welcoming surroundings. Our pubs are individual and spirited; great places for local people, businesses, families and visitors from home or abroad to eat, drink and sleep in – and to call their own.
Each pub is different, individually designed to suit their town or village. We also enjoy the challenge of restoring and enhancing what are often historic buildings. If you see anything you like in terms of our décor or artworks, and would like to source them for yourself, please ask one of the team for details and prices. We showcase British artists and small manufacturers of furniture, fabric and wallpaper wherever possible and are always happy to spread the word about the craftsmen who supply us.
Peach is not a chain. It’s a group of likeminded enthusiasts. We aren’t trying to be the biggest; we’re out for perfection on a small scale, fuelled by a passion for good food and drink, great service and real hospitality.
